Nature of the position

The Assistant Dean of Students is a full-time academic professional in the Student Assistance Center/Office of the Dean of Students. The Assistant Dean provides leadership, strategic planning, and day-to-day administrative oversight of the Off-Campus Community Living unit within the Student Assistance Center. Off-Campus Community Living (formerly the Tenant Union) provides services to students who live or plan to live in privately owned apartments or homes in the greater Urbana-Champaign community. As a member of the Student Assistance Center team, the Assistant Dean reports to the Associate Dean of Students and also serves as a resource to students who seek the services of the Student Assistance Center.

Duties and Responsibilities

1.Deliver direct housing counseling and advocacy for student-tenants with concerns including, but not limited to: poor building maintenance, deposit refund disputes, housing discrimination, violation of tenant's privacy, non-compliance with leasing terms, evictions, subletting, housing contract review, and housing search assistance.

2.Assist and advocate for students experiencing crises. This includes working with students directly as well as consulting with faculty and staff colleagues to assist them in managing student crises.

3.Assist students (families), faculty, and staff who seek guidance around a range of student- related academic, health, behavioral and personal issues in the Student Assistance Center.

4.Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of all Off-Campus Community Living educational programming, communications, and services.

5.Coordinate efforts in food and housing insecurity initiatives for the Office of the Dean of Students.

6.Increase students' awareness of tenant resources available on campus and in the local communities.

7.Promote positive interactions between students and their roommates, neighbors, and landlords.

8.Educate and empower students to become successful, responsible, and engaged members of the campus and surrounding communities.

9.Actively promote and advocate for safe and healthy living environments for students residing in non-university owned or certified facilities.

10.Initiate and steward partnerships with campus units, local agencies, governments, property owners, and/or community groups which provide resources and support for students living in non-university owned or certified housing.

11.Serve as Emergency Dean for seven to nine weeks each calendar year. The Emergency Dean is on call at home from 5:30 pm-8:30 am for a period of one week. The emergency dean handles most calls by phone but will occasionally be called out to the site of an emergency.

12.Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative/collaborative working relationships with a diverse community of students (families), faculty, and staff • Ability to sustain high levels of engagement and commitment in doing work that focuses on a particular range of student related issues

Required Experience

• Master's Degree in counseling, higher education, student personnel, or related field is required.

• Candidates must have three to five years of professional full time work experience in student affairs in a higher education setting.

• Experience with selection, training and supervision of student employees.

Preferred Experience

• Experience serving in an on-call emergency response team rotation is preferred.

• Experience educating or advocating for tenant's or consumer's rights is strongly preferred.

• Experience resolving housing conflicts between landlords and tenants is strongly preferred.

• Knowledge of state statutes and city codes affecting landlords-tenants is strongly preferred.

• Familiarity residential lease contracts and housing issues are strongly preferred.

• Familiarity with local leasing market, landlords, and services available to tenants is preferred.

Salary Statement

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
