Director, Research & Portfolio Management
The University of Illinois Foundation is the official fundraising and private gift-receiving organization of the University of Illinois. It works closely with alumni and friends, faculty and staff, corporations and foundations, as well as campus development professionals to create fundraising programs and opportunities that benefit the University. The Foundation has an immediate opening for a Director, Research & Portfolio Management. This position Leads, manages, and administers the Research and Portfolio Management functions and the Research office in support of private fundraising efforts by the Foundation and the Universities and in accordance with University of Illinois Development Program values.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1.Develop and manage procedures for systematically collecting information on, and evaluating the philanthropic potential of, individuals, foundations, and corporations and integrating this information into the advancement database.2.In partnership with the Universities and Advancement offices throughout the units, provide system-wide leadership of prospect identification and portfolio development, developing strategies to expand and retain a loyal prospect pool of philanthropic and engaged constituents throughout their lifespans.3.Investigate, assess, and implement emerging technologies, data sources, and vended products to assist in research and pipeline development and management to enable the Universities and units to optimize their fundraising portfolios.4.Oversee the prospect rating and assignment process and work with the Universities and units to identify the best and most appropriate prospects.5.Manage staff who assist the Universities and units to assess and monitor the potential and effectiveness of relationships between prospects and the institution, identify possible areas of philanthropic interest and engagement, and recommend and implement business process improvements to optimize those relationships and maximize the efficiency of moving prospects through the pipeline.6.Establish a suite of pipeline and portfolio analyses and reports, in conjunction with the Foundation's analytics team, to inform strategic management of the development program and its team.7.Keep abreast of strategic and fundraising priorities across the enterprise, especially as they pertain to the campaign and areas of opportunity for prospect development.8.Provide recommendations to leadership on development research and portfolio management policies, procedures, and needs upon request. Serve as the functional lead for database-related initiatives for research and portfolio management.9.Oversee the management of the research request queue, ensuring timely and high-quality response.10.Supervise the research staff and perform related departmental management responsibilities, including the establishment and ongoing evaluation of departmental goals; oversight for the departmental budget, and management of individual performance and professional development.11.Strengthen customer relationships across business lines, both within the Foundation and across the development program.12.Serve as a key liaison to the development program's campaign team.13.Participate in cross-departmental projects and other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: •Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree in Information Science, Library Science, or other analytic discipline preferred •7+ years' experience in business development, marketing, sales, or fundraising •Strong working knowledge of higher education •Experience in complex, matrixed organizations •5+ years of supervisory experience, preferably with teams of 10 or more •Ability to quickly comprehend, explain, and operationalize complex data sets and analyses, to appropriately manage and communicate sensitive information, and to foster a collaborative work environment.•Understanding of wealth and biographical indicators and portfolio management processes from information discovery to compilation and sharing, through referrals, and to transfers of portfolios, and retirement of prospects.•Demonstrated leadership and coaching skills through cultural, business, and technological changes •Experience with relational database products, data structures and reporting.Preferred candidate will be a results-driven, fast learner who is self-motivated, can concurrently manage and reprioritize multiple projects, and who brings experience from a variety of functional areas across an enterprise.
