Director of Operations

The Director of Operations is responsible for the administration and supervision of the operations department for the Champaign Park District. This is a full-time, salary position. The Director is responsible for the maintenance and efficient operation of all district facilities including fishing piers, softball, soccer, and baseball fields, tennis courts, pavilions and playgrounds. The Director of Operations is also responsible for all grounds, management of arbor, flower and turf programs and for the performance of the operations, maintenance, special projects, and horticulture staff.


• A Bachelor's Degree in park management or a related field • Eight or more years demonstrated success in supervision, construction, and maintenance of park and recreation areas •Demonstrated knowledge of budgetary planning and execution • Knowledge of horticulture, landscape, special projects, and maintenance as it relates to the development and maintenance of a park system and facilities • Ability to plan and organize work effectively and manage multiple tasks simultaneously • Ability to effectively communicate with staff, co- workers and the residents • Working knowledge of plumbing, electricity, HVAC, and carpentry • Knowledge of conservation of lakes, streams, prairies as well as manicured formal parks and sports complexes Functions • Hires, supervises, trains and evaluates the land scape, maintenance, special projects, horticulture, and departmental administrative assistant • Supervise federal and state grant application preparation and the administration of grants awarded the Park District for planning and/or development of park facilities • Assure that employment policies and procedures are followed in the department, including safety programs • Conduct public presentations as required • Available for on call 24 hours/day or ability to designate responsibility party to be on call Considerations • Must be able to positively interact with the public, especially in adversarial situations • Must be able to withstand up to six hours of outside weather conditions including sun, snow, rain, and wind • Requires construction math capabilities as well as budget development skills • Able to grasp new concepts, information and work within legal parameters for park maintenance
